Cocoa Butter and Dreams. A Collection of Poems, Paintings and Ponderings on (my) Blackness is the first book in English by Belgian author, columnist and theatre-maker Dalilla Hermans. This layered art book combines nearly ten years of poems, letters and essays — some originally written for the stage, many never published before. Hermans wrote them all in English, the language she instinctively turned to when giving shape to Blackness within a European context. The collection also features twenty original paintings, created especially for this project. With tenderness and colour, Hermans explores the emotional and cultural weight of Black womanhood: the joy, the doubt, the memory and becoming. Cocoa Butter and Dreams offers a quiet but vibrant journey — one that speaks to anyone navigating identity, memory and belonging.

Cocoa Butter and Dreams. A Collection of Poems, Paintings and Ponderings on (my) Blackness is het eerste Engelstalige boek van auteur, columnist en theatermaker Dalilla Hermans. In dit gelaagde kunstboek combineert ze bijna tien jaar aan gedichten, brieven en essays — sommige geschreven voor het podium, vele nooit eerder gepubliceerd. Hermans schreef ze stuk voor stuk in het Engels, de taal die zich het meest liet lenen voor het verwoorden van Zwart-zijn in een Europese context. Het boek bevat ook twintig originele schilderijen, speciaal voor dit project gemaakt. In penseelstroken en taal onderzoekt ze wat het betekent om Zwart te zijn en te worden: in kleur, aarzeling, vreugde en herinnering. Cocoa Butter and Dreams is een zachte, beeldrijke reis — voor wie zoekt naar taal en kleur om zichzelf in terug te vinden.

Dalilla Hermans is schrijver, theatermaker, trajectcoördinator, podcasthost, publiek spreker, illustrator, curator en VUB-erefellow. Ze publiceerde zeven boeken. Sinds begin 2020 schrijft ze om de dag een cursiefje voor De Standaard.
